  • A pass in Grade 8 of the candidate’s principal instrument from the Associated Board of Royal School of Music or Trinity College of Music or any other equivalent
  • Students who have only achieved Grade 6 will be given consideration as well if sufficient standard of performance is shown in the audition.
  • A Grade 6 (minimum) standard (1992 syllabus) in the Music Theory from the Associated Board of Royal School of Music or Trinity College of Music or any other equivalent
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Refer to appendix A for substitutions of the prerequisites


Note: Any student who does not meet the above requirements but shows other capabilities to pursue this Diploma will be given consideration through an audition conducted by the Principal.

Seimpi Academy, in collaboration with London College of Music (University of West London) has designed a training course for the above diplomas, awarded by London College of Music (University of West London).  The courses are suitable for teachers or adults who are interested to teach music to pre-school children, seeking qualifications which are recognized internationally. The courses are carefully planned to accommodate the needs of professional musicians who have had music training and those who have not had a music background. It adopts a modular system, with practical guidance to prepare students well to take on the early childhood teaching professionally and effectively.

Course Objectives

This course aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • to provide professional guidance to early childhood teachers or adults who want to embark on a career in early childhood music teaching
  • to provide ample training to prepare students in pedagogical skills as well as upgrade their musical abilities
  • to provide practical understanding in early childhood music such as lesson and course planning, choice of suitable materials and presentation
  • to assist students in preparing for the diploma in teaching (early childhood music) examinations conducted by London College of Music (University of West London).


Duration of dipLCM in teaching (early childhood music) course

The course comprises of 4 modules with 2 of the modules, namely the theory and keyboard skill conducted over a period of 10 months. The aural and musicianship skill is given 16 contact hours in total, over a period of 4 months.  As for the other module: early childhood music, is conducted in the form of workshops, lectures and group discussions, over a period of 5 months, with a total of 30 contact hours. The module marked with * is compulsory for all students. Students who possess LCME theory grade 5 or equivalent may opt to take only the compulsory module. Students who do not possess LCME theory grade 5 or equivalent need to take all other non-compulsory modules. Students must possess LCME theory grade 5 or equivalent upon enrolment of the dipLCM in teaching (early childhood music) examination.

THE DESCRIPTION OF EACH MODULE

Early Childhood Music  

This module introduces the important issues concerning teaching of early childhood music. It involves understanding of the music development of the early years, songs and rhymes, planning of appropriate activities and classroom management skills.

It helps students in the preparations of all the components of the dipLCM in teaching (Early Childhood Music) examination. Practicum and mock teaching practices are conducted to give students an in depth understanding of the real class situations.

Theory of Music

Students are going to be guided through the important and essential concepts in theory of music. This module also aims to prepare students to sit for the LCME Theory grade 5 to gain pre-requisite entry qualifications to its dipLCM in teaching (Early Childhood Music). Lessons are conducted not only with guidance to the working of musical theory exercises according to the syllabus of the grade 5 theory examination of LCME, students are also exposed to listening materials necessary to strengthen the understanding of the theory concepts.

 Aural & Musicianship

This module aims to guide students in building up their aural and musicianship skill, a skill which is important to help teachers to deliver music lessons more effectively and imparting musical knowledge with full awareness of the importance of building up 'inner hearing' in children. Students are taught singing in solfege system based on the Kodaly method. It employs the 'movable doh' system, building up students' vocal skill to sing confidently. Harmony, development of rhythmic sense and sensitivity of pitch are also taught to make sure students reach an appropriate level of aural and musicianship skills suitable to be an early childhood music teacher.

Keyboard Skill

Teachers teaching early childhood music classes should possess some knowledge to use the keyboard effectively, to provide not only harmonic accompaniment, but also to make use of the available sound register, drum machines and other keyboard features to make music lessons exciting and fun for pre-school children. Trainers of this module will guide students on developing keyboard harmony and accompaniment skills, using suitable songs for children.


Duration of ALCM in teaching (early childhood music) course

The course comprises of 3 modules with 2 of the modules, namely the aural & musicianship and keyboard skill conducted over a period of 4 - 6 months. As for the other module: early childhood music, is conducted in the form of workshops, lectures and group discussion, over a period of 5 months, with a total of 30 contact hours. THE DESCRIPTION OF EACH MODULE

Early Childhood Music  

This module is designed based on the requirements of the ALCM in teaching (Early Childhood Music) examination. All the topics about early childhood music teaching will be discussed further in depth to give students a good grasp of the different approaches in planning for pre-school children music classes in longer terms.

The pedagogical issues concerning the teaching of aural skill, theory of music, musical understanding, musicianship development, musical knowledge are discussed with proper guidance given to students on searching for useful readings and suitable teaching materials.

Aural & Musicianship

It continues to strengthen students' abilities in aural and musicianship to include more advanced singing exercises, rhythmic trainings and ensemble practices. Students are expected to sing in 2 parts, using 'Curwen' hand signs and be able to transpose their voice to suit the needs of classroom teaching.

Keyboard Skill

Apart from giving students more advanced scores and keyboard harmony exercises, students will now learn how to play similar songs in different accompaniment styles. The Trainer of this module will help students to find suitable music, scores and suggest ensemble arrangement to assist students in Component 1 and 3, 'Teaching and Presentation' segment of the ALCM diploma examination.


Duration of LLCM in teaching (early childhood music) course

The course comprises of a major module, early childhood music, conducted over a period of 5 months, with 30 contact hours.

THE DESCRIPTION OF EACH MODULE

Early Childhood Music  

Students at this level should have had ample experience in teaching early childhood music classes. The course will concentrate on making researches for good teaching approaches, concepts and methodologies. Professional guidance is given to students on coping with all Components in the LLCM in teaching (Early Childhood Music) examination. Students are expected to prepare their own dissertation, observation or evaluation report and practise their presentation skills in the class.

Lesson Structure

Lessons are conducted in the format of block lectures, small-group discussions and workshops, demonstrations and practicum.
